Daksa island

The island of Daksa, which is the smallest island in the group of Elaphite islands near Dubrovnik. The surface of the island is 5 hectares, with the highest point of 24 meters. On the northwest cape of Daksa is the lighthouse “Daksa Island.” The island was a well-known gathering place for religious people and monks from all over Europe for centuries, and there was a monastery built by Sabo Getaldić on it in 1281. The Franciscans lived on Daxa until the arrival of Napoleon’s army in 1806, after which only the ruins of the monastery remained.

In addition to the monastery, there were other significant buildings on Daksa, including the small church of St. Sabin and a four-story tower that served as a fortress and bell tower. Remains of chapels, so-called chapels, are also visible on the island. oratory, which formed a unique Way of the Cross on Daksa. During Lent, the island was massively visited by the citizens of Dubrovnik and the surrounding settlements.

After a period of army changes and the destruction of sacred buildings, Daksa was bought by the Polish prince Alexander Poninski. He restored the island, planted pines, laurels, lemon trees and cypresses and equipped the monastery with a valuable library with more than 4000 books and 200 manuscripts.

Koločep island

The Toreta tower rises above the mother church, an imposing structure about 14 m high and 4 m wide on each side. This defense tower, with a small window above the entrance, symbolizes the struggle and survival of the island throughout history.

Koločep was also host to aristocratic families such as Đorđić, Zamanja, Ranjin, Držić and Sorgo, who owned summer houses, fields and vineyards on the island. Their legacies still contribute to the island’s charm today, making it a place where history, culture and natural beauty intertwine.
